Yes. Charlemagne is the "legend" part. The Twelve Paladins, the Matter of France, etc. Karl der Große is the historical part; the king who conquered and formed the Holy Roman Empire.
It would be like if you had Dracula and Vlad Tepes as separate characters.
So Charlemagne is treated as a different person than Karl der Große even though Karl der Große is Charlemagne's German name?
