I feel like it's really weird that we have a page on Stockholm Syndrome with no mention that it's a contentious subject among mental health professionals. It is very controversial, both in the psychological and legal worlds, as to whether or not this syndrome even exists. I'm not saying scrub the page, but maybe at least a disclaimer?

So I'm writing a story, and I wonder if the following backstory would count as Stockholm syndrome or just an unusual recruitment:

So you have La RĂ©sistance opposing a tyranical government. At one point, their leader gets severely wounded, and no one has medical training. So they abduct a person who has medical training but was so sheltered that person fell hook line and sinker for the government propaganda and had no idea of the atrocities the government committed, planning to just release them when they are done with that person. But that that person asks the one guarding them why they do what they do, and the guard shows them evidence of the government atrocities (say, a video of the Secret Police torturing or executing people who have only committed the crime of disagreeing with the government and explicitly mentioning they are punished or interrogated about "seditious speech"), and that person decides to join La RĂ©sistance as their dedicated medical expert because "how could they do this to people who did nothing wrong (or, at worst, committed what she sees as minor crimes not worthy of such a disproportionate response), and lie to us about that? I've got to do something about it!". In short, the resistance vs gov't conflict is Black-and-Grey Morality with the resistance being grey and the gov't being black, and the person makes their choice based on that, even though the nature of the fight was exposed to that person in an unusual fashion, would it still be Stockholm Syndrome?

The following are Zero Context Examples. If you're familiar with them, please flesh them out and return them to the main page.

Anime and Manga

Films - Animation

Literature

  • The Bourne Identity - the book. The movie didn't display any cases of Stockholm Syndrome.
  • Tobias and his torturer Taylor in Animorphs.
  • The hostages in Bel Canto develop this.
  • Jacen Solo develops this with Vergere in Traitor.
  • Princess Irulan in Dune shows this to Paul.
  • A Song of Ice and Fire:
    • To some degree, Sansa in A Feast For Crows.
  • Livvie in Captive in the Dark by CJ Roberts with Caleb.

Live Action TV

  • This was also a plot in an episode of Sledge Hammer!.
  • Kim Bauer starts to develop this far too rapidly in the first season of 24.
    • This is misrepresenting it a bit - she teams up with the only person around who feels remorse about his role in the kidnapping, and it does take her a few hours to really trust him.
  • CSI explored this trope with the character of Tammy Felton in the episodes "Face Lift" and "And Then There Were None".
  • Arguably, Marian had this toward Guy of Gisborne in the BBC's Robin Hood.

I took out this "He even considered letting go of Finland at some point, but didn't say it because it was too embarrassing for someone like him." from the Axis Powers Hetalia section because it's not even true. Neither of the two strips in which he mentions being too embarrassed to say something have anything to do with that. Those two are shown here: http://aph.starry-sky.com/spsn.html and http://aph.starry-sky.com/5syuunen.html
