"winning a bizarre race in 1888 in which Cleveland won the popular vote but Harrison prevailed in the Electoral College." - ah, there is a precedent, then. Or the answer to a pub quiz question - "what does Hilary Clinton have in common with Grover Cleveland?"

The first such contest (unless you count the 1824 contest which went to the House because nobody won more than half the electors) was 1876 and it is to date the only one where the candidate with more than 50% of the official popular vote tally lost (and by one electoral vote, to boot).

It has been called "an election that the Democrats stole and the Republicans stole right back", which is accurate insofar as the KKK and others did a lot of voter intimidation, which made the majority for the more racist candidate possible in the first place.
