They didn't give the award this year, so I thought it was discontinued?
How weird. Last time I looked at it, it was still listing the 2022 date. Glad the returners are still getting their shine.
Thinking that we should reorganize the "Rivalries" section as there is currently no real rhyme or reason to the order. Maybe by total meetings? First played?
Hide / Show RepliesBeen punting on thinking of a clean solution on that for two years while working on other projects. Hard to do alphabetically bc naming conventions are inconsistent, and can't really do it by region or conference. First played would probably be cleanest, with total meetings serving as a good tiebreaker. I can work on it today unless you want to handle it.
I likely won't be able to take on any large projects for a while, so it's all yours.
Update to the Alabama-Georgia football rivalry: the Bulldogs defeated the Crimson Tide 33-18 in the 2022 CFP Championship Game.
I wonder if we should eliminate causes of death from every deceased coach and player, as it adds a lot characters and the page is really getting slow to type entrants onto.
Edited by wesker56 Hide / Show RepliesI could go either way on year of death, honestly. Is typing just slow on this page for you? The lastest Chrome update made the whole site run slow for me while editing unless spellcheck was turned off
Edited by ClaystripeIt's typing on longer pages like the Useful Notes pages in College Football and NFL Football. Those are the only problematic pages, and I have tried on a 3 year old laptop as well as a brand new laptop and both are slow when going to edit longer pages.
Yeah, that's the same issue I was having. Try turning off spell check if you have that running.
I just now turned it off. I'll test it out later when I think of a good name or edit to make.
EDIT: It works much better now.
Edited by wesker56Unless it's especially notable for some reason (Rockne, Ernie Davis come to mind, possibly some others) they can both probably be dropped.
And yeah, it'd gotten slow for me too. Will try the spell check thing.
I think it should work for you as well, as I thought it was getting slow due to the amount of characters. And I would suggest keeping deaths that were tragic and considered nationwide tragedies like Davis and Rockne.
What do folks think about cutting the win records from most of the coaching entries? Unless it's a record-setting thing, I think it's probably fine (and definitely shorter) to just describe the coaches' personas and contributions and leave the numbers to the Other Wiki.
Note: Am fully aware this is coming from the guy who added those kinds of numbers to the various team entries... but that seems much more manageable in the current list format than figuring out a way to try to integrate them into prose.
Edited by Claystripe Hide / Show RepliesI think it can be safe to say that Ed Orgeron has earned his entry onto this list, as the reasons for his dismissal are becoming more and more clear, including the attempted seduction of a married woman at a gas station, whose husband was a high ranking member of LSU. https://twitter.com/NicoleAuerbach/status/1449796587497086978?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1449796587497086978%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthecomeback.com%2Fncaa%2Fed-orgeron-lsu-tigers-agreement-2021-season-reactions.html
Hide / Show RepliesWould hold off on adding him in Notorious for a little bit until those reasons for firing are fully clear/more widely reported on. He probably deserves an entry in some form, though.
I'm leery of adding him, as he's still active and adding active figures results in lots of edits over time to their status. I think I'll wait till this situation plays out and see how the court cases regarding the Derrius Guice/Title I-X go.
The more that is coming out...wow. Complete horndog. Apparently he hit on a pregnant woman at a gas station who happened to be the wife an LSU higher-up. Probably only a matter of time.
That was my first thought. I think more women might come forward and detail some disgusting stuff from his stops at Ole Miss and USC. His incompetence was always there and he got lucky to have one outstanding season.
I wonder if we should abbreviate almost all mentions of Hall of Fame to HOF on all football pages, as it seems to be a universally accepted term for the institutions.
Hide / Show RepliesI might go through and do some of them later on, as it will shorten up the pages by several characters.
Thoughts on creating a folder for pre-20th century players? The game was so different and many lack clear positions, but are extremely notable for historic reasons. I have a bunch I would like to add but I don't want to overwhelm say, the "Running Backs" folder with a bunch of generic 19th century "backs".
Hide / Show RepliesI think it would be wise, as the game was basically a rough and tumble affair with hardly any rules.
I've been wondering about how to create an entry for the Poe Brothers. All six played college football for Princeton back in Princeton's powerhouse days of the mid 1890s to the 1910s. And on a cool note, all six were related to the famed author and poet Edgar Allan Poe, being second cousins once, twice, etc. removed.
Edited by wesker56There should really be a "Ken Burns - Baseball" style documentary series about the early days of college football. There are so many wild stories and interesting figures. It's hard to do them all justice here.
I think it would be fun to see somebody talking about the early days of the sport. I read about this guy whose bum knee would need to popped back into place and he was a little guy at that on a defensive line.
I was thinking of moving Urban Meyer into the notorious coaches and administrators folder, as his time at Florida and Ohio State was marred by controversy, that effectively ended his tenure at both schools. He is alleged to have created a toxic culture at Florida and gave the star players preferential treatment that included not having to complete workouts, lenient punishment, and hiding positive drug tests. Also, during his time at Florida, Florida had an inordinate amount of players getting arrested off the field. It really makes one wonder if he retired due to his "health". As for Ohio State, he covered up spousal abuse allegations involving Zach Smith, an assistant on his coaching staff in 2018, and departed again after the season, again using his "health" as a reason for retiring.
Hide / Show RepliesWhen I'm deciding where to put someone who could go into a notorious section, I step back and think about what they are more notable for. For Meyer, the controversial stuff is secondary to his program building and national championships. Not saying it's right, but those acts are almost never brought up while his positive accomplishments are. Compare that to some of the others in the notorious section can no longer even get jobs in college football for their notorious acts. If Meyer were to choose to return to the NCAA, every school with an opening (and even some without) would be rolling out the red carpet for him.
^ What Baron said. I honestly think Meyer is a scumbag (and not just because my family's from Michigan), but you can't deny that he's been immensely successful. It may be worth including a note or reference to some of his controversies, but I definitely wouldn't move him to "notorious"
OK. I will think about adding his controversies to his entry, as they deserve to be mentioned, to show that for all the success he has brought, he also brought with him a culture of toxicity that has destroyed one program in Florida and nearly wrecked Ohio State.
I think the coaches and administrators folder should be moved to its own useful notes page, taking the notorious coaches folder with it as well eventually.
Hide / Show RepliesProbably the best move to follow the NFL page and just move the whole Names to Know to its own page when/if the page gets too long.
I think there's a lot of issues with this page that also need some cleaning up more generally (page image, paragraph length, etc), but I've left it on the backburner for other projects because I'm not as personally invested in college football
Don't split it until it needs it, but yes, once we reach that point, splitting off the coaches first makes the most sense.
It does need a lot of cleanup, as it's a mess to view when editing. But let me say I appreciate you people cleaning up my edits, as I'm not the best at wording, and never will be. I enjoy finding the names though that could be worthy of including, as a head coach is just as responsible for the program's success as much as the players.
Thanks for the contributions! The editing's not a problem (in fact, I enjoy editing more than writing in a lot of cases, which is a good thing since it's my actual job). If you ever want any help with wording and stuff, feel free to DM me.
Edited by ClaystripeThanks for that. I have a list of names I have found that I want to add to college football coaches folder, and some for the notorious coaches folder as well, depending on your interpretation of notorious, like Gary Moeller for his drunken incident that led to his resignation at Michigan and Gene Stallings for being the beginning of Alabama's Dork Age in the middle 90s to middle 2000s. Also, I thought Robert Neyland, Wallace Wade, and Ralph Jordan, as all three are responsible for turning Tennessee, Alabama/Duke, and Auburn into powerhouses or respectable programs respectively.
Edited by wesker56It seems to me like the entire conference folder can be trimmed down to just a list with one sentence descriptions or even deleted entirely, since all of the information is repeated and expanded upon on the conference page.
Hide / Show RepliesAgreed. If there is a detail missed that someone really cares about, they can re-add it on the conference page.
If we have to stick with the BCS system, I say that we get rid of the "Automatic Qualifier" status of conferences. I say that the BCS takes to top 10 teams and puts them into the BCS bowls.
So when the hell do these players get time to, you know, study?
Hide / Show RepliesThe maximum amount of time that a player can participate in sports activities is 20 hours a week with a maximum of 4 hours per day and it is required that at least one day a week off. So there is time to study and do the sport. Also I have heard that at some schools, the athletes have academic help if they need it.
Was the Jet Award intentionally deleted for some reason?
