I had to read this play last year in AP English Lit and Comp and one of the essay questions we had was concerning why the play was described as "An American Dream Gone Sour". Part of that question asked what the American dream is/was. The play, in itself, seems to be asking that question. It's not just how Willy completely screws up his life the overall question is challenging the reader/watcher to define what the American dream really is.
