One of the first drafts for the musical is actually available online. It's very similar to the musical, but has a number of significant differences (what happens at the end is different from ANY other adaptation!). Should we acknowledge it here or on its own page?

Can I get confirmation from anyone who's seen the show; is it really confirmed that the children die? From what I'd heard it's left ambiguous; Mrs. Gloop goes off to try and get Augustus before he's carmelized, Mr. Beauregarde is told to take him daughter to the jam room before he ferments, Mike is put in his mother's purse... But I haven't seen it, can anyone confirm or deny?

It's not outright confirmed that any of the kids die, but no one's prognosis is good and the audience receives no confirmation of their fates either way. (All the potential demises are offstage.)

  • Augustus, as noted, might be saved from the boiler.
  • Violet might be restored if they hurry.
  • Veruca and her father? No potential for saving them is given, unlike the above two kids. Charlie and Grandpa Joe actually wonder, as the remaining group goes on, whether Willy Wonka would indeed leave those two to a firey doom.
  • Mike looks to stay shrunk forever because his mom prefers him that way.

(I've addressed the ambiguity on the main page.)
