Pretty sure this is stopped by the "No Two Me" issue. The heroes have to go far enough back in time so that they don't exist at the time, meaning that the 70's is about as recent in the past they can travel, unless they want to send teenagers or younger in the pods.

That makes sense, as all of the good time travelers actors (and presumably their characters) were born in the '80s.
Is there a "Just Eat Gilligan" solution here? Why don't the heroes go back to Mason Industries' past and stop the project that leads to the time machine? Or just get them to beef up security so Flynn can't steal it?
