Removed from main page, as there is a cleanup effort on ZeroesAndOnes underway and I am not sure what to do with this entry:

  • Zeroes And Ones: Subverted. The opening sequence of the first episode begins with a screen full of binary, only for the numbers to turn suddenly into front-facing and sideways Medals.

Would you say that Super TaToBa Combo is meant to be an homage to Skyrider's upgraded suit? You know, kinda like how Fourze's Rocket States is supposed to be an homage to Super-1 and his arm changing ability.

They would probably be in the Master of None territory along with Tatoba Combo due to the fact that they don't excel in any particular area on their own. Although it's hard to say, considering there are more than 500 Random Combos due to the mix-and-match options available.

Is it just me, or is the Dinosaur combo underwhelming? I was expecting the Medagabaryu to look like a seriously hardcore weapon instead of the dinky, toyetic thing we got. And the abilities of the form (flight, a tail, and shoulder spikes) don't seem to present an image of raw power the hype around it has built up.

I feel the same way. I'm probably one of the few people who go "meh" at dinosaur action, then add some mythical creatures to the mix and you have a combo I'm not too keen about.

Well they can't have the Medagabaryu look too much like a real weapon - remember, it has to be kid-friendly on the surface. If you realize how he's holding it improperly and how badly designed it is for an axe you'd be even madder.

Should the Original OOO be listed as a Big Bad or Bigger Bad? While he's a Posthumous Character, his actions directly started the plot and everything describing him points to the fact he was a villain. Everything in the entire series is directly his fault for creating the Greeed to begin with, which he did for a very selfish motive, to become a God, so wouldn't that make him a Big Bad or Bigger Bad?

I edited two things about Dr. Maki and I hope the changes I made are acceptable: 1.) One troper wrote Maki burned his sister just because she was getting married and "couldn't spend as much time with him". To me, the episode implied that Hitomi was completely abandoning her brother ("Even if I'm gone, think of her [the doll] as me. It'll be fine, because you're a genius!")) 2.) I don't think Maki can create Yummies out of candle holders. ^^ Rather, his ability is to create Yummies from nothingness, representing the desire of the purple Core Medals.

It isn't so much that he's creating it from the candle holder, it's more of an item that represents one's destroyed desire or dream. In this case, that may have been the candle holder that he used to set his sister on fire.

Do the Condor and Batta (Grasshopper) Medals' powers count as Body Horror? I mean, they do perform some pretty gruesome-in-hindsight deformations (splitting his calves in three parts and super-condensing them, respectively).

I suppose. Once again, the blame goes to the toy designs. Though from what I can see, what Batta Legs seem to do is to morph and extend his shoes specifically; granted, his feet still gets "squished", but it's a little less scary to think this way.

Really? When I go to rewatch the episode I remember him activate the Batta legs, it looks like his entire calves get compressed to barely the width of a human leg-bone (whatever bone is in the calves). Then there's the Kujaku legs, which we recently saw splits both calves along vertically into thirds, and then rotates the outer two thirds past 180 degrees.

I just saw Kamen Rider BIRTH's info on Wikipedia. What I'm wondering is about his CLAWS equipments; aside from their "equipment names", they seem to have "secondary" names: Solent, Salamander, Vermilion, Brighton and Haze. Is there some sort of Meaningful Name or Theme Naming in those?

I know Solent is a strait and Brighton is a beach, both near/in UK... I think. Vermillion is a common name for MANY rivers in North America. Salamander sounds like a lake name, but I can't remember where. And Haze? Has anyone heard of large bodies of water with these names?

Maybe we should wait a bit. Like you said, it's only beginning to be hinted around #15-16. It might be too early to say anything about it for now. But if you don't mind a bit of speculation, it certainly sounds like "All Your Powers Combined".

No, no - I meant the whole PLOT of the "Multi-King", not the powers. ^^ "There's also a prophecy that whoever obtains every Core Medal shall become the destined "Multi King" of the Greeed." [from tvtropes] This is written in most summaries all over the internet and it put the fandom ahead in terms of the plot. It took them 16 episodes to just hint at the fact that the scientists who created the medals had bigger plans for them, no "Multi King" or "prophecy" mentioned yet. That sounds like a spoiler to me...

Other tropes that would make sense for him would be "Improbable Hairstyle" (sleeps in a park, falls into a river and always has perfect hair...does he keep a curling iron in that arm?) and perhaps also "Blond Guys Are Evil".

I used "Ra" because it's the show's pronunciation. Simple. And there's no "La" syllable in "Lion"; "Ra", on the other hand, there is in "Raion". See what happened to the Transformation Tune under Ear Worm when you changed to "L"? Just doesn't match.

The problem is that there is an official iteration: "Latorartar". I decided to tweak accordingly because that name makes almost no sense, in addition to being non-descriptive: There's no "La" syllable in "Lion", there's no second "R" in "Tora", and there's no "R" in "Cheetah" either. Besides, it's general knowledge that Toei likes to use Engrish whether correct or not, so that's another reason for Woolseyism.

Ryulong Since: Dec, 2009
Jan 2nd 2011 at 1:21:52 AM •••

Exactly. There are official translations but Infinix has taken it upon himself to ignore them outright. Toei and Bandai have chosen Latorartar, Sagohzo, and more recently Tajadol. Toei has chosen to use "La" for this because it's identically pronounced to "Ra". Just because they didn't make the names have "Rai" in the beginning so it's pronounced like the first syllable of "Lion" does not automatically make it a Woolseyism. If Engine Sentai Goonger has "Birca" on it when his name is "Baruka", along with all of the other translation stretches, there's no reason this page should not have Latorartar and Sagohzo and Tajadol.

"TaJaDol"... huh? Dude, I don't know if you're a native English speaker, but just drop this. There's no "H" in "Gorilla"; there's no "A" in "Lion", second "R" in "Tora" or "R" in "Cheetah; and there's no "L" in "Condor". There's no way I'm using that broken English on this page. I've given you multiple reasons for taking liberties; in fact, again and again, publicly and privately. I preferred not to say this, but I'll be direct: If you have no other reason than "It's not official." or "I don't like how it looks.", just forget about it. Go to Wikipedia; they'll accept anything official without a second thought.

Note: I used "Birca" because it's a combination of "Bike" and "Orca" or a light twist on "Iruka", and it makes sense either way. Since that was in a kid's show with lots of wordplay, the twist on "Iruka" didn't matter that much.

I was born in the good old US of A thank you very much. And yes, there's no H in Gorilla, no A in Lion, no L in Condor, but that's what Toei is going with. And why do you get to make every single fucking decision anyway? I already have all of the official names and whatnot on Wikipedia because I'm the only one with the best grasp of the rules and the English language there to write about it.

Why decide that this season/series/show/money printer should not use the Engrilish Toei and Bandai like to throw around?

Infinix Since: Jan, 2001
Jan 2nd 2011 at 6:16:01 PM •••

I don't consider myself to be the center of decisions on any of the pages on TV Tropes; nobody ever appointed me in such a position either. However, I'm someone who made the page, check it daily and moderate/edit accordingly to be understandable for both Tropers and outsiders alike. That and probably because I've been here long enough and made some useful changes that people generally don't see my edits all that harmful.

The main reason I decided to throw down a standard is because there was no standard in the beginning, and nobody bothered. Medals are written in both English and Japanese; form names are just chaotic, the worst offender being RaToraTah and his romanized cousins. At least now there's a single standard the page follows. And it's doing well so far.

If you're thinking that I don't wanna use Toei/Bandai's Engrish, I'll assure that it's not strictly the case. You don't see me tinkering around with TaToBa or GataKiriBa. And I accepted "Gamel" and "Mezool" just fine, since it's consistent with the light plays on Greeeds' related verbs. I take the good and simple parts of both official terms and Woolseyisms and try to combine them accordingly; I used most of the official names on Go-onger page, didn't I? I want the pages I moderate to make sense, and that's all.

And about the Combo names: Of course I can see those are the English names Toei chose; that's a no-brainer. It's synonymous with "These are official names."; saying that changes nothing. Do you know how much they're used practically? So far, everyone's using whatever they want, even toy vendors who can see the name clearly. Why? Because when most people search for these forms, they use the pronunciations. No wonder: They contradict from both the general formula of Combo names composed of syllables from all three animals, and the transformation songs, not to mention being less descriptive.

You're an occasional contributor here, Ryulong; there's nothing wrong with that, but you don't know the page as well as I do. What I suggest is to put these official names under "Spell My Name With An S" - RaToraTah resides there since around the beginning, in fact. - and just drop this topic altogether. This is a trivial matter. Whether this page uses official terms or not is nothing that impacts the creators or their official information. If people want official info, they'll go to Wikipedia; TV Tropes is certainly not the first choice for that.

Ok then. I'll get on to it ASAP. If it works, we can apply that to other pages as well.

EDIT: I've done the "preliminary" edit. It doesn't turn out too difficult, though I'd like to make clear the distinction between the two sections. The "Rider" section is essentially what the "Recurring Super Sentai Tropes" is to SS; generally, tropes about the Riders' designs, powers and arsenals can go here, but not character traits/personalities. Those belong in the "Story" section.

I'll admit that I did have some doubts splitting the sections with some tropes because Kobayashi's writing the merchandise aspects (Can-droids, for example) into the show, thinning the line between "purely asthetic" and "crucial to the plot". So do take a look at what I missed and what could have been shifted. But hey, at least people can see the general Rider tropes readily, so that's a plus.

Oh, and some tropes may overlap between the two sections, like the Ear Worm entry for example: It's got the songs which do not seem to fit in Rider section, and the OOO Driver sounds which certainly do.

If you're referring to how the page renders the Medal names, I try to keep them in English since Combo names alone are confusing enough for non-Japanese speaking people. With some Medals, I take a bit of liberty to mimic their fluency in Japanese; like "Hopper" for "Batta" and "Octo" for "Tako".

So yeah, best kept in English, the way I see it. This is an English wiki, after all.

I propose this as a problem because Cakeboss is entirely parody and non-canon. As hilarious as it is, we're here for tropes related to Kamen Rider OOO, not Cakeboss. I propose the deletion of tropes sprouting purely from Cakeboss, whether put under Memetic Mutation/Badass/etc, and not from OOO. Tropes of cakeboss are not always tropes of OOO.

I agree. The memetic version of CakeBoss is purely something a group of people (however large that may be) derived from the character. In other words, it's out of the series.

We should make a page for the Cake Boss meme, it seems to be becoming a work in of itself.

Are we going to have a line for every one of OOO's finishing moves? I mean, look at all the possible combos the main article admits to, and you can see why this could be a bad idea.

Ryulong, what's wrong with the way names are rendered in the page? I don't blame you for not knowing why they're rendered that way, since you rarely show up on the page(s) (mostly to "correct" names); if you didn't know, you should have asked first, but you just edited them out of the blue without even discussing.

And yes, I know they're not official terms. If you wanna ask why the renderings are different, the simplest answer is "understandability".

Medal names are rendered in their English translations, since this is an English wiki. This also applies to Yummy names. I don't mind you adding the Japanese names in their list near the page's end though; if anybody wants to know the Japanese term, they can go there. Nothing problematic here.

Combo names use camel-cases because they're combinations of three Japanese words. Without the camel-case to separate each word, it gets jumbled. It's not like the camel-case is hard to type either; just sandwich the word in "[= =]". Easy.

And about Gameru and Mezūru's names; the ones you gave (the same ones from Wikipedia) aren't even official ones. The Greeed don't have official English renderings. The problem is that those Wikipedia renderings ruin the names' meanings.

Lastly, I understand that you prefer "official correctness", but TV Tropes isn't Wikipedia. WP may take anything "official" without a second thought, but TT likes to play around, thus its own renderings. Next time, DO ask.

The CamelCase isn't used (all names are parsed in CRUISECONTROL) and neither is "LaToraTah". I'm just trying to make the things the official ones like they do on WP.

And Gamel's and Mezool's names are official because those spellings appear in episode 7. I'm trying to get a screencap to show that right now.

Well, fair enough for the G & M's names then.

And to be honest, I'm not completely against official names. However, Toei's not known for a good grasp of English, and when their own romanizations/renderings don't make sense, I consider picking/making up something more sensible. OOO is a case like that.

Well, Toei seems to be sticking with "Latorartar" for now. And I'm fairly certain that the next Combo is Sagohzo. To be honest, the CamelCase only works with TaToBa. GataKiriBa, LaTora(r)Ta(r|h), SaGohZo, ShaUTa, CoraKaWani, TaJaDoru, and ToTeraNoZauru don't really work.

Infinix Since: Jan, 2001

Well, I wouldn't say it doesn't work, because it still shows the split between the parts of the name. Like I mentioned earlier, for the sake of understandability, and also for consistency in the page, I'd opt to sticking with the CamelCase, at least until a better method is discovered. And hey, it's not like Toei's gonna come down here and sue me/us for that; they're not exactly doing a superb job with their namings either.

And are those new form names? Where are you finding those from? Not because I doubt those, mind you - ShaUTa, for example, is pretty obvious after the Medals' revelation; I just couldn't find info on those as they're not even hinted in the series yet.

I just think that CamelCase is only going to work with the mixed Combos (which I've been told today are "Random Combos"). So TaToBa, TakaKiriTah, and GataToraZo work, but ShaUTa is going to be awkward and ugly.

Shauta is Mezool's group, Tajador is Ankh's group (there's going to be a Peacock [Kujaku] and Condor Medal), Corakawani is some unknown reptile Greeed group (Cobra, Turtle [Kame], Crocodile [Wani]), Toteranozauru is the dinosaur form (Triceratops, Pteranodon, Tyrannosaurus).

I know what you mean about ShaUTa, since it looks like the odd one out. But if we keep the Camel-case consistent for the page, the feeling will pass eventually. The thing is, just before recently, I tried using hyphens between words, like Gata-Kiri-Ba; however, other editors keep reverting those again and again, so I just sort of gave up. Quite a shame, because hyphens make the Combo names simple, clear and neat, even though it's not the official one-word format. If the hyphen format sounds good to you, I've got no objections.

Oh. People have been mucking around with the O Scanner, finding all of the hidden sound bytes. I think it's just better to go with one word without CamelCase, because frankly it's a lot easier to write. But then, we're going to be arguing about that for a while now.

[Nod] [Sigh...] I'm starting to feel pointless about arguing how to write a particular name in a Tokusatsu. Let's just ask the others then: Single word, CamelCase or Hyphen? I'm still for Camel and Hyphen, but for the sake of the page consistency, I'll just go with the majority's choice.

Dang it, Toei! If you wanna use English/Romanization in your show, at least do it properly!

Kamakiri vs Tora Ok, there HAS to be source for that "Kamakiri medal outclasses Tora medal" someone put into the CMOA entry. All we've seen is that Eiji doesn't use the Tora medal very much and that he does use the Kamakiri medal often. Does this necessarily mean Kamakiri "outclasses" it? No, not at all. Maybe Eiji just prefers the backhanded blades of the Kamakiri. Maybe he doesn't realize that he'd have more reach if he used Tora instead - he IS a drifter not a fighter. Until someone argues indisputably (read: source or compelling argument) that Kamakiri definitely outclasses Tora, the strikeout text is staying there.

I doubt there is a source on that; Core Medals are only differentiated by their location on the holder's body, and not by their uses. All are shown to have their own uses already. And a matter this trivial is nothing worth arguing to begin with, so just drop the argument for the sake of a simpler, cleaner page. Please.

I say find a good replacement now, especially given that the Lion Medal is much closer to orange than Cheetah.

I suggest just restricting the colors of the same category in just its basic color, like this:

  • Stag-Mantis-Hopper
  • Lion-Tiger-Cheetah
  • Rhino-Gorilla-Elephant

Let's face it: there's still Orange and Purple to come. Given that TV Tropes code doesn't seem to support hexadecimal color editing, it'll be much less work; and even if it does support it, having to type "#********" every time isn't practical. Besides, anyone can easily tell a Core Medal's category with its color spectrum and animal.

So, with all due respect, let's just save ourselves a boatload of complications.

Probably not every single one, but depends on what the episodes present. And it's not the first time either; Samurai Sentai Shinkenger also went the same way that it got enough to have its own C Mo A page. The fact that both series are written by the same writer might also be a factor here.

If a moment is presented well enough to be awesome, nothing wrong with writing it down.

It is if it starts clogging up half the page. The last thing we need is for people to start taking every single mildly cool thing and parading it around as a Crowning Moment of Awesome, like in Order of the Stick.

I'm up for starting a C Mo A page already.

I do vaguely remember that it's around that point, yes.

I'll at least predict that OOO will have at least equal, if not more, because it's got more room for writing, unlike Super Sentai which is restricted to a strict "mould" every episode. If C Mo As start to clog, just give them their own page.

Category-wise, that's what would seem like, so far. But it's only 5 episodes in; hard to tell for sure right now.

Oh, but if you're wondering if the same monster suits will be re-used or not, I don't think they'll do so without a good reason, particularly an in-series justification. Monster concepts may be overlapping over the decades of Toku development, but there hasn't been a shortage of designs in a series.

Does anyone have a trope for the Greeed's color-coded curtains? They seem to be there for symbolism and dramatic presentation, but doesn't seem to be part of the story otherwise. (It might get lampshades in the future though.)

No, no. What I meant isn't about the colors; it's about the curtains as "abstract" props; they're definitely there as props, but they're just "imaginary". Nobody seems to adress or acknowledge their existence; they're just there for symbolism.

It might change in the future though: Eiji lampshaded the O-Scanner's singing; who's to say he wouldn't do the same with the curtains? On the other hand, the O-Scanner isn't an imaginary prop; it's an actively "participating" prop.
