Turns out that Fox was sued, by all things, by the California Lottery about the advertising of this show. Early adverts for Greed stated that its top prize (2 million dollars) was the biggest money prize ever on television. However, The Big Spin had a top prize of 3 million while Greed was broadcasting, and at one point had given away a prize of over 15 million dollars.

What trope does this fall under?
