Darker and Edgier: Though there's still plenty of witty banter and amusing physical comedy, the horror elements are played far more seriously than they were in Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, skewing closer in tone to the original film.

The series is definitely lighter than Evil Dead 2 and about on par with Army of Darkness. It's a half-hour series, which is traditionally reserved for comedy shows, and it plays its comedy much more straight, with the hero being a doofus and even most scary scenes undercut by some sort of gag. Evil Dead II is mostly a horror film, with occasional darkly comic beats. The original film has almost no humor and is waaay more serious than this show.
