The episode ends with Vastra, Jenny, and Strax stranded on Trenzalore, and the Doctor and Clara stuck inside the Doctor's rapidly-collapsing timestream... presumably this will all be straightened out in a future episode. But the next episode simply picks up several months later with (presumably) everyone and everything back where they belong. I'm not sure what trope this falls under: What Happened to the Mouse?, Left Hanging, or Negative Continuity.

  • Domestic Abuse: River once again tries to hit the Doctor. For the first time, he doesn't let her and instead grabs her arm mid-slap, finally opening up a conversation that they should have had a long, long time before.

Other than the running gag of River shooting his hats, I can't remember River being abusive. There was the whole assassin thing, obviously, and her slapping him in " The Wedding of River Song". However, given that River was brainwashed into being an assassin and ultimately gave her remaining regenerative energy to save him, I don't think it's a straight example. She slapped him because she was upset he brought her back to watch her younger self murder him. While hitting is never okay, I don't think that example qualifies as domestic abuse either. Also, the discussion the two of them have in "The Name of the Doctor" wasn't about abuse. It was about the Doctor's inability to properly say goodbye.

  • Broken Base There is already internet backlash from many fans who would prefer the Doctor's name—implied to be revealed in this episode—to remain a secret.

No idea how to start a new YMMV page off of an existing page.

I don't think you can on Recap pages; usually, the link appears automatically when the main page is created.

You can — in the address bar, where it says "https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki.php/Recap/DoctorWhoS33E13TheNameOfTheDoctor", replace "Recap" with "YMMV". That'll force a page creation. The same holds true for the others — for instance, replacing "Recap" with "Trivia" for a Trivia page.

Is this version of the Great Intelligence from before the Patrick Troughton stories? If he's dead then doesn't this create a paradox? (Or, at least a continuity snarl?)

I think it was implied that both "The Bells of St John" and "The Name of the Doctor" were after the Troughton stories for the Great Intelligence, since there's no evidence the Intelligence can time-travel.

But he gathers up Vastra, Jenny, and Strax from the Victorian era.

Possible Fridge Logic? How did River get her invite to the Conference Call, given it's explicitly mentioned that the incarnation of her that turns up is the Data Ghost from the Library?

Sending a message impregnated with a fast-acting hypnotic 100 years into the future (Clara's invite) is one thing, sending a message to a few million lines of code in a computer system on another planet in a different time period is another thing entirely!

Also, how did Vastra know that "today" for the Doctor (and Clara) is April 10, 2013? San Dimas Time?

The Continuity snarl part says that John Hurt's Doctor "has to be either before William Hartnell or between Paul Mcgann and Christopher Eccleston". There is absolutely no basis for this speculation. The time travel nature of the show means that there is no reason why the John Hurt Doctor couldn't be a future incarnation, and/or one that has been somehow removed from time/space due to cosmic retcon technology. The Valeyard is a perfect example of this..

If he was from the future then 11th wouldn't have any memory of him, would he? Although Cosmic Retcon is possible

I thought this as well. In fact, the first thing that came to my mind was that it was either the 12th or 13th Doctor...or even an aged Valeyard.

Technically, since we've seen all of the other regenerations *on screen*, it would logically have to be either before Hartnell, between Eight and Nine, or possibly between Two and Three, since Two was forcefully regenerated into Three before exile. Who knows what he did or was made to do then...

Nothing that's ever been actually shown on screen has ever been removed or undone completely, to the point where a previous episode or event has been completely removed. Somebody always remembers, somebody dies, etc. Once the Doctor has meddled, it becomes a kind of fixed point.

Remember, the *viewer* is an observer for the Doctor. Things that we see happen, *happen*. Things that we *don't* see happen are the ones that are open to being changed, that are capable of being rewritten...until they're written by us seeing them happen on screen.

The Eccleston Doctor is three hundred years older than the Mc Gann Doctor - so conceivably the Hurt incarnation could be a /very/ aged Mc Gann...which may please a lot of the fan base, because that would make the generally disliked Mc Gann incarnation the one who screwed up the worst of all...

No, people love 8. It's just the movie that's seen as bad.

Although, Cruise's comment about Eight screwing up the worst, may actually be the explanation: Assuming Eight lived that long, he'll have destroyed Gallifrey twice; first to prevent the Second War in Heaven, second to end the Last Great Time War.

Come to think of it, is 'What I did, I did in the name of peace and sanity', ever described as a singular event? Considering everything to happen in the Eight Doctor Adventures, he's the most 'active' Doctor, so to speak; the destruction of the TARDIS, destroying Gallifrey, crossing his own timeline to meet all his past incarnations, and who knows what else.

Page is locked :| Anyway, the show has aired in the UK now, so here are a few things for when it's unlocked...

Title Drop: As well as the repeated, "Doctor Who?" we get one for the episode.

Mystery Man: "What I did, I did without choice-"
The Doctor: "I know."
Mystery Man: "-in the name of peace and sanity."
The Doctor: "But not in the name of the Doctor."

Wham Line: In an unique twist, it's a line of text on-screen following a Face-Revealing Turn.

Introducing John Hurt
*a few seconds pass*
