Why did they do that bit with Thomas Thomas? If he had just given Strax directions, I would have called it clever. But instead he sounded exactly like an automobile's GPS, leaving me wondering if he was going to turn out to be some sort of robot from the future or something. It felt more like product placement than anything.

It was a joke, Tom Tom is the most popular brand of GPS (Sat Nav) in the UK.

Well this is the Whoniverse so here is a Wild Mass Guessing rant, maybe this means Thomas Thomas will at some point meet a likely planned unfortunate event. He will be converted and its 21st century form will be the literal mind behind TomTom (and Powered by a Forsaken Child no less). Its link to our world is that roaming mapping street cars like those employed by Google are there to actually keep its mind updated with current map data and to provide sufficent stimuli to keep the mind active.

Probably. I've added it to see what Wiki Magic makes of it.

This page is checked out right now so I can't fix it just yet- the reference to "the Gobby Australian" (ie: Tegan from the classic series) is not a noodle incident- as noted further up the page it is a continuity nod. The point of a noodle incident is that it is never fully explained or revealed to the audience. Here, an explanation exists, even if the viewer would have to watch the classic series to get it.
