What's the trope for "Something happened in real life to make the story better, accidentally"? Because the fact that the Doctor just regenerated is the only thing that explains why he falls for the Rani's disguise. Also, Mel wasn't aware he'd regenerated, so when they're reunited, both the Doctor and Mel think the other's an imposter at first.
OK, yeah, those aren't BIG improvements, but they definitely make for a better story than it would have been if the Doctor hadn't regenerated at the beginning.
The Doctor claims he and the Rani are both 953 years old. Wasn't the context for that the fact that the Rani used the number "953" as a password?
