After acquiring the first segment of the Key to Time, the Doctor and Romana are set to travel to Calufrax, a "dull, boring, and tedious" ice planet, to find the second segment. What they find instead, however, is an entirely different planet altogether. Now on Zanak, a decidedly warmer and extremely mineral-rich planet, the Doctor and Romana must find out where Calufrax and the second segment have gone, but they find out that there's much more to Zanak than meets the eye.
With nearly every citizen decked out in fancy jewellery and very rare minerals littering the streets, the Doctor is thrown into a new mystery as he finds out about "the Captain", the man supposedly responsible for his people's wealth, Queen Xanxia, the power-hungry former ruler of Zanak, and the Mentiads, a mysterious group of "evil zombies" that strike fear into Zanak's citizens.
As the Doctor travels further into Zanak's history and crust, he finds that Calufrax has not only been "swallowed up" by Zanak, but the entire planet is the second segment to the Key to Time! Not only is Zanak the "pirate planet" of the story, but there is a major reason for such galactic-scale pillaging, one which could potentially threaten the balance of the universe... Oh, and the Earth, too, as always.
