Does anyone else think the ending for this show is more of a Bittersweet Ending than a Downer Ending? Sure, it ends with Kaori dying and Kosei not getting with Tsubaki, but from what I saw of the anime, it felt like a somewhat hopeful ending regardless, nothing that got me depressed. If this show really had a downer ending like all the pages claim, then it would've ended with Kosei killing himself after Kaori's death, or at least him reverting back to being unable to hear music while playing the piano.

So yeah. Excise Downer Ending, replace it with Bittersweet, throw in a comment about how it borders more on Downer as a tribute to the previous status. Does anyone else agree, or am I just a crazy person?

I agree.

I always thought that a Downer Ending implies that it was a somewhat unsatisfactory conclusion, which is not the case. One has to see that Kousei at the very least was left with the means of support that he lacked when his own mother died, and gained the ability to cope with loss, which had almost crippled him in his youth.

Kaori left him with the greatest gift of love she could give him under the circumstances, and went out with a bang... and that's not quite a Downer, is it? Of course, as you argue, it does come close to a Downer due to Kaori's demise, and it should be mentioned in the trope.
