Judging by the setting and the sheer number total rat bastards Kenshiro has to fight and the total lack of gratitude he recieves from those he seeks to aid, I'd say Fist of the North Star falls slightly more to the Cynical end of the Sliding Scale.

On the other hand it can be argued that the point of the franchise is "You can make the world a kinder and gentler place if you try; where there is love there is hope." This isn't Black Lagoon.

Was it ever explained or revealed what happened to Lin's puppy Pell? I've only seen the anime and not read the manga but in the anime the puppy just suddenly disappears.
