About the "flash floods in deserts" thing, I thought that was due to the lack of erosion from previous rains causing a lack of effective drainage and lack of plants and topsoil to soak up water leading to large buildup. I didn't think the weather actually behaved differently.

Should we put "No real life examples" into this one too since this trope just asks for trouble?
You can tell if a region has an absurd amount of sudden rain when every country road has a series of ditches around it, each one 10 ft. deep and 30 ft. wide, for miles on end. South America indeed fits that list.
It doesn't overlap with flash floods if the region has good drainage (or those ditches), but when it does, expect deep valleys between mountains to flood like so. I heard Italy's Alps are famous for this.
