The new picture doesn't really work either. Eject Warp Plasma flushes electro-plasma from the warp core, not the impulse engines. Which would be the equivalent of weaponizing the coolant water from a contemporary reactor by spraying it onto a target, not weaponizing exhaust from the reaction drive as per the trope (and in STO the exhaust from your ship's impulse engines doesn't do crap against an enemy's hull). The old picture works much better, IMO, since it involves the reaction drive itself.

The page image is mislabeled; assuming that the ship is the Angel's Pencil finishing off first contact with the Kzinti Empire, the weapon is actually a coherent light drive doubling as interstellar communications beam: i.e. a massive frickin' laser. Not a fusion drive—it was in fact stated that the Kzinti craft was more maneuverable specifically because THEY had a fusion drive and could thus churn out a lot more reaction mass at once.
