Table top games use this too. Example Dungeons and dragons. When the DM uses a battle map and miniatures this comes into play. When a PC goes invisible the DM will put a some sort of marker either a tile or a piece of paper that says invisible under the miniature. If a monster or hostile NPC goes invisble the DM will either do the same and instruct the Players to keep player/charater knowlege sperate or remove the piece and mark the monster/hostile NPC location on his or her map.
