It sounds like hyperbole to me, as well, or else someone just blindly throwing out something they believe to be true.

Really? I was under the impression people usually boiled bath water. It's possible it was too much hassle to get clean water (or to get enough water) to bother with regular baths, but I can't see how safety would be an issue.
