I'm not a geneticist, but given that birds come from a different theropod lineage than tyrannosaurs, shouldn't ALL birds be equally genetically distant from Tyrannosaurus?

You are absolutely right from a biological point of view. I think the emphasis on chickens, out of all birds, in only due to Rule of Funny (since chickens are funnier than other birds).
Since this was never posted here, Tyrannosaurus Rex has been disambiguated per TRS.
