Any idea of a cut-off for this trope? It seems that anything over 20 years is a pretty straight period piece and no longer "20 minutes into the past."

I'm averse to having a defined cutoff, since media may progress between time periods or not be particularly rigid in their rendering of the date. Tropers are free to use their judgment and erase or move entries if they think an entry is specific enough to be a period piece.

The X Files- is this really a good example, or does it have more to do with the production schedule of the pilot? The rest of the series is clearly meant to be set in Present Day.
