So, is the trope now just "A criminal organization presents itself to the public as an ordinary business to hide its true purpose", rather than specifically ones that do a bad job of it? Because that probably fits more of the examples, but needs a complete rewrite of the description.

No, we kept that part of the definition. The disambiguation page located at the trope's old name just wasn't clear about that, so I adjusted it, since the TRS thread said this is still about thinly veiled fronts. Covert Group with Mundane Front covers more well-disguised fronts.

"In The Godfather films, Vito Corleone poses as an "Olive Oil Importer", and occasional references are made to "the Olive Oil business" when characters do not want to refer to what actually goes on. (Subverted in that he actually does have a legitimate business that imports olive oil; it just isn't where most of his money comes from.)" This movie is still on my to-see list (so I can't confirm this) but it sounds like this trope is not there. Maybe it's Covert Group with Mundane Front. Can somebody confirm?

Not to be confused with Rockstar's cross-media website associated with all their games that have online play.

This is not an example. It's not a glaringly obvious front in the sense meant by the trope. (And these guys are partially mafia, partially Dread Servants Of The Horrible Flaw That Is Eating The World From Within Every Surface. Or something.)

  • In Mulholland Drive, a couple of humorless men approach some movie producers and tell them who their next actress they're going to cast is going to be, point-blank, no finesse. The producers are terrified of the two guys and the directors is upset and flabbergasted until he gets the hint and realizes to his dismay that his movie is being commandeered by the mob.
