IIRC, the original proposed name for this trope was "Overdogs Shouldn't Compete" which IMO fit better. It wasn't exclusively about sports, but was about competitions where one competitor had some sort of advantage that made them likely to win and thus, entering knowing this was seen as rude or unfair, even if there was no actual rule forbidding it. The main reason it was changed was because some tropers viewed "Overdog" as an awkward word.
I do agree that the current title isn't good and that "too qualified" makes it sound like it's about job applications when it's not.

The trope examples and the overall trope description all seem to revolve around sports...but the trope name itself suggests that this could also apply to anyone applying for a JOB (such as the excuse given not to employ the main character in the book version of To Sir, with Love (although, in fairness, in that particular case the real reason was cultural institutionalized racism). Could we consider a rename of the trope, or a shifting of the description and the examples, so that it is clearer that this trope is only referring to sports OR that it doesn't only cover sports?
