Is it possible to play with this trope?

  • Exaggerated: The title theme plays at every (or nearly every) key turning point.
  • Downplayed: The title theme is played in the background of another track or shifted to another time signature.
  • Subverted: The theme is played in a minor key instead of major or vice versa, or the first part of the melody plays but a different tune plays instead of the rest.
    • Double subverted: The other way round for either.
  • Defied: The reprise is interrupted by a Villain Override and corresponding BGM Override.
  • Invoked: The opposite of the above.
  • Justified: A character is playing it as a Theme Tune Cameo.
  • Lampshaded: The theme starts before the main character enters and the character's enemies go "Oh, Crap!" or their distressed friends have a "Hell, Yes!" Moment, then the character emerges.
  • Averted: In a long-running series that usually does this in a given context, a subsequent entry uses a new theme.
