Is Rincewind really a subversion, or simply not an example?

Not sure about adding this Real Life example.
- Italian military gained a fame of cowards due their lackluster performance in most wars they fought. Those wars were fought by the Italians as aggressors and with the soldiers barely motivated. Once Italian soil is invaded, however, those soldiers become fearsome opponents, as best evidenced by World War I: for two years they attacked with little convintion, fighting seriously only when cornered and retreating when the Austro-Hungarians and the Germans broke through at Caporetto, only to suddendly become much braver and eventually annihilating the Austro-Hungarian army after seeing the civilians running away from the advancing enemy.
Shouldn't the trope namer be here? "The so-called coward and the traitor"? There's not a section for poetry, though.
