  • The oft-mistranslated Deuteronomy 22:24 in The Bible is actually an early prototype of the Shotgun Wedding from several millennia before the shotgun's invention: if a man "takes hold of" (for sexual purposes, the passage strongly implies; the common mistranslation reads "rapes") any woman who isn't pledged to be married, he and she will continue to "take hold" of each other from now on, as they'll have to be married. And he can never divorce her, no matter what. In short, if you go messing with a girl before agreeing to marry her, she'd better be Worth It, chump.

The actual context of the passage - which I think is actually 22:28 - makes it fairly hard to interpret as not at least including rape.
