Does the trope only relate to engineers in combat/on the field, or can they be engineers as 'just' their job, even if they tend to giant robots who fight?

J Chance: I think the Naval Engineer (sea or space) needs to be a separate type here. There's a big difference storywise between taking care of innumerable pieces of equipment and babysitting one gigantic one.
