So, isn't something like this inherently sexist by nature? You have your little group of guys making their presence felt by some nonstandard rules about dating and women that aren't even portrayed fairly towards them. Sounds to me like something that would-or should, considering the modern era-be a Dead Horse Trope before too long.
Hide / Show RepliesHow is this sexist? This has very little to do with the woman in question, and all to do with social nicety. Think of it this way: Many sisters have an unspoken understanding about not going after the same guy, especially after one has made their interest known. It's the same thing, but goes beyond the bonds of blood.
Its a simple "I respect you as a person, and I'd feel like shit if you got all up in my sister/mother/ex, so I'm not going to do that to you." situation.
The Bro Code is definitely older than How I Met Your Mother. In fact, even the name or some form of the name was used before that show.
Why does this link to The Girl Code as it's Gender inverted equivalent?
It's only that one that exists in real life.
Ok, apparently that trope doesn't exist here. The Girl Code is certainly a far more common occurence in fiction, it was on One Tree Hill since season 1, well before How I Met Your Mother, it's also in Odd Girl Out
