At least it was before Margaret Thatcher got her hands on everything, though.... it's interesting how a lot of the hate and shuddering loathing formerly expressed at the 1970's has now, with the passage of time, been transferred to the 1980's, to its clothes, hairstyles, entertainment and social attitudes. And nobody ever knocks 1970's music...

I do wonder if, as every new generation grows into adulthood, it looks back on the time when its incredibly embarrassing parents were our age (ie, late teens and twenties), and transfers the shuddering embarrasment and visceral loathing to the decade in which those middle-aged train-wrecks were "our age".

Today's late teens and twenties would have been born in the 1980's/1990's. Therefore their decade of loathing is that in which their parents grew to adulthood, wore hideous clothes, styled their hair badly, listened to corny old-fashioned music. And the focus for "ugggh!" has moved on from the 1970's.

It's generational: I grew up in the 1970's and had all those feelings of lack of style, taste, lousy music, et c, for the hideously grotty 1950's....

Thatcher's supporters would prefer to hark back to the decade as the reason her prime-ministership was necessary (i.e. strike and winters of discontent, supposedly inefficient nationalised industries, &c.)... I'm ambivalent though.
