It always confused me how the victims clothes also get turned to stone. Shouldn't they just stay the same material while the wearer turns to stone underneath them?

Can someone explain this to me? If a character like Medusa turns people to stone when they look at her and Perseus defeated her by holding up a shield that showed her own reflection... how did she avoid being turned to stone before that? In some versions, there is more than one Gorgon sister. Do they just walk around never looking at each other? How does Medusa stay away from any reflective surface including water?
Does anyone know about an episode of a series where numerous men and a panther get turned to stone?
