Is this trope only limited to people who die early in a sequel? It seems like there are a lot of examples where people die quite late.

Not necessarily early in the film, but have relatively little screen time before being killed off, e.g., Mayor Garcia in The Dark Knight Rises doesn't show up until the halfway point but gets dispatched after only like one or two scenes, which would fit trope.

If you played most of Nippon Ichi's later games, you quickly realize that this happens to an extent to nearly the entire cast of Phantom Brave.
Who exactly and where was it stated? This Troper knows Castile and Volnut survived, and doesn't remember anyone else mentioned. The example is removed until proved otherwise.
