Wow... subliminal messages and use of sex to make ads more subconsciously seductive? But... ads use sex blatantly, and already work subconsciously with the parts you see normally! None of it has to be subliminal at all!

Actual backmasking is separate from subliminal messages in general. Many bands, inspired by all the hype in the media about instances of backmasking that probably weren't intentional and are really only comprehensible by means of Insane Troll Logic decided they might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb and actually started putting Satanic messages backwards on their records. Give the public what they want - it was a good luck charm on the record sales because no publicity is bad publicity. Weird Al's "Satan eats cheese whiz" message would be an example of this reclaimed "bad is good" trope of backmasking. But by that point, it's not really about subliminal messages anymore, it's about causing controversy or making fun of controversy.
