Most definitions of South Asia do include Afghanistan in it, and it is a member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
Any sources on those "most definitions"?
It's a member of OSCE, but isn't European (like 2/3rd of members). And SAARC doesn't include Burma, while being created originally to include territories forming Raj. It's almost as if the name of the association is meaningless.

People, I get it, this is a trope and it simplifies things around, but Afganistan is explicitly NOT South Asia, no matter how you bend the definition. I get it, there is no trope for Central Asia terrorists (so all the various groups from Afganistan, Uzbekistan and Turkiestan or how Chinese label Uyghurs), but labelling Afganistan as South Asia is an equivalent of saying taco is your favourite Italian dish.
