Curious why that happened? Were people adding things in a fairly biased manner, or was it preemptive?

Moving this example here for discussion:
- The reason the Mimbrates and Arends are fighting in the Belgariad is because of an argument over what to call their shared ruler back in the day - "Queen" (the Mimbrate option) or "Duchess" (the Arend option). The current queen is not happy to learn her country's tried to kill itself over a formality. The war finally begins to cool down at the end of the Mallorean when it's discovered that there's a country descended from displaced Mimbrates that has figured out how to solve its problems without war.
While that's a simplified statement of the original cause, the war has continued so long because the Arendish nobles have been refused their rights and positions as nobles. And the original question is legitimately a sticky one of oaths and fealty caused by the bizarre ruling situation.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.
I think this should be a No Real Life Examples Please trope.
