Erm... I think there's a problem with the "If it doesn't regenerate, it's just Destructible Armor" idea. Mainly it's because Didn't Need Those Anyway! (which Destructible Armor redirects to) relates to damage levels being reflected by enemy equipment being destroyed, not a boss that is invulnerable until a shield projected by something that is vulnerable is shut down.

Whether or not individual examples qualify:

I pulled this one:

  • In La-Mulana, Tiamat is protected by four infinity glyphs in the corners of the room. She is only vulnerable when all four are destroyed, and a larger glyph appears over her body which serves as a Temporary Platform. If the player lands there, the glyphs reappear in the corners and have to be destroyed again.

This isn't strictly an example of the trope: Tiamat can actually be damaged at any time — if you can get close enough to strike her before she turns away (moving her head out of range). This is what summoning the Infinity platform is for: So you can climb up and get a strike in from behind her head without taking Collision Damage in the process. The four infinity signs in the corner of the room don't protect Tiamat, either — on the contrary, striking them seals off her power and prevents her from using her hair-lashing attack. It is still possible to leap down from a higher platform and damage her in the split-second before she turns the other way.

The following are not examples of a Shielded Core Boss:

  • The Bulwark Beast in Runescape starts the battle with its armored hide intact. In order to damage it with normal attacks, you have to use a pickaxe to hack away at its rocky exoskeleton until it breaks.
  • The boss of the second dungeon in The Legend Of Zelda Links Awakening is a genie whose bottle protects him from harm. In order to damage him, you've got to break the bottle by using the power bracelet to pick it up and smash it against the wall. When his bottle breaks, he Turns Red and becomes vulnerable to your sword.

The reason is because their shielding/armor does not regenerate — once it's destroyed it's destroyed; and that's just Destructible Armor.

An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.

Um, guys, it would be nice if you'd added this trope on the pages of the games mentioned here. Otherwise no one will know that it exists. I haven't played most of those games, so I'd rather not do that myself.

The state of TV Tropes.
