"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo I wanted to include a bit about how Toonami paid homage to this trope once. A long time ago, they had a special airing on Valentine's Day called "Villaintine's Day" as a celebration of all the bad guys in their lineup. I'm just not sure where to put the example.
This trope is listed on the No Real Life Examples Index but contains a bunch of RL examples. Should they be deleted or should this be re-indexed to In Universe Examples Only?
Can this trope apply to a Complete Monster? Despite the villain being a total scumbag while the hero is someone you're genuinely rooting for?
Hide / Show RepliesI'm not sure how any audience is supposed to root for both the protagonist and antagonist if it's such a stark case of Black-and-White Morality.
Also, why do we have both separate pages and folders for the categories? It's pretty confusing and unnecessary
"Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending."-Jim Henson Hide / Show RepliesNever mind, I get it now. Crap, how do I delete this?
"Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending."-Jim HensonUsually not. You can ask here though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAccording to Danny Elfman in the Hollywood Backstory edition for Edward Scissorhands, some test screeners were rooting for Jim, the villain, by saying that Edwards was being a total "fag" for taking his girl. Also is the Discussions Page the right page for making suggestions?
The Internet isn't just for trollsIs this page for actual fans who are just doing it wrong, or just people who completely dislike the work simply latching onto an antagonist as a result? Because I see examples of both here.
Hide / Show RepliesNeither. It's simply for the phenomena of audience members supporting the bad guy.
I root for the villain most when it's a Femme Fatale, Honey Trap, The Vamp or Fille Fatale. Strangely the last one has the highest success rate in fiction.
...Um, why is Caesar's legion on here? I mean isn't the point of the game that all three options equally valid (for reasons already posted on the New Vegas headscratchers page)? So if no one is the definite villain how can any you root for them?
Hide / Show RepliesThe game, as it actually exists, does not paint Caesar's Legion as anything but the bad guys. I'd say it qualifies. Just because most factions are grey doesn't automatically mean that every faction is grey.
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comAgreed that they are the designated villain (admittedly even that is an at best statment). The original post about Caesars legion cited Fan dumb and implied there was NO real argument in their favor, rather then the issue being a major source of controversy. It has since been fixed.
I really, really hope this article is kidding http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/248ipzbt.asp?page=1
Edited by Fireblood Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.-Philip K. Dick Hide / Show RepliesSadly, no. I would call it a mix of "romanticized fascism" and a desire to be edgy by rooting against the white hat heroes.
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comNot owning War For Cybertron or the associated literature so I might be wrong, I thought the term "Autobot" was a relatively new term, and Megatron's rebellion was against the ruling Cybertronian elites which didn't have a name.
"Avalanche/Kitty Pryde (Lancitty) is one of the most popular cannon pairings of the show." Yeah, where did they get that from? Lancitty is one of the LEAST popular pairings, its squashed by Romy, Kurtty, even Kiotr, amongst other pairings. The fact is, it doesn't just have little fans, but it has lots of HATERS, its just the fans are very Vocal about there love for this. Only some fans liked the Brotherhood to the point of feeling sympathy, these are the Draco In L Eather Pants fans, they do have fans who love them, but FOR their jerkassery and villainy.
What evidence is there that the CIS would have wiped out human planets? It was publicly headed up by a human (and according to the Revenge Of The Sith novelization, a human supremacist). At most you could say that the CIS would have wiped out more planets, if only because General Grievous was more extermination happy than any Republic top officer (until Palpatine made the Empire and got people like Tarkin into positions of absolute power).
(I will buy the "wipe out Coruscant" argument to the extent that General Grievous is the kind of guy who would have done that if given the opportunity)

Is it called "rooting for the Empire" when you simply want tragedy? For example, if you simply feel that a specific story would be more moving if it ended tragically, or if more broadly you just want more stories to end tragically?
