What if the affliction earns them redemption, particularly in the eyes of the audience if they went through enough.
Does in the order in which things happen matter for this trope? For example, for Jaime Lannister, he didn't start attempting to be a decent person until he lost his hand - it's more like "affliction prompts reform".
