Maybe its just me but when I hear RPG I do expect that it means branching story path with lots of opportunities for you to decide how the character acts.

Removed the following examples, since nearly all of Summoner's XP came from combat, and Borderlands is fundamentally a Roguelike, as roguelikes ARE all about combat:
- Summoner gives EXP for completing quests - whether they're combat-related or not.
- Borderlands is one of the straightest examples you could find of this trope, but there is a small aversion: Completing any mission gives you experience, and several missions are "go meet this new contact." This may be surprising given the Excuse Plot, but like Mass Effect above this ends up a very tiny fraction of the XP you get.
I disagree that VTMB is action oriented. First of all, whoever of you who wrote this "most of the time you've just gotta throw down and kill something to complete the quest" nonsense is a goddamn liar. It's an objective fact that almost all of the available quests in the game DO reward stealth and diplomatic approach more than violent one and at least more than half of the quests DO give you opportunity to solve the problem with tree different solution(aka stealth/diplomatic/fight). If you don't believe me, then go and check any of the full walkthrough or finished FAQ. There is even some quests that simply does not have a violent solution at all! Or what do you say about the fact that stealth remains valuable tactic through the whole playthrough right until the final boss? Yes, you have to finish at least 6 mandatory boss fights for the main quest and the last part of the game has no diplomatic solution available, it's true. But the thing is that aside from those small sequences Bloodlines never insist that you must fight stuff, so I really don't get why do you people so sure that it's not a real trope aversion case.
