The original was somewhat of an overhostile description. It is true that the relationship got discredited because it was used by Those Wacky Nazis. However through most of history most of government was a Russian-doll like structure from the king or the emperor down to small clans, feudal overlords, or merchant cities in most parts of the world and whether it was a benevolent, sinister, or just neutral arrangement would vary. At the least the term "puppet" has nazi like connotations and "vassal" would serve just as well.
