Isn't this trope the result of deconstruction of Cut Lex Luthor a Check? Lex starts working for good cause crime doesn't pay, but being a mercenary does.

Will I be informed if people reply to my discussion post?

I put away this example from Night Watch:

  • Somewhat complicated by the fact that even the "bad" people may want to do something good but literally can't, because they've been basically randomly assigned to the dark side and will disappear into thin air if they ever do anything selfless.

Because it's untrue. While Light Other cannot do evil things because they'll disappear, Dark Other can do as much good as they want. In most extreeme cases, if Dark Other do a major good deed, they became Light Other instead.
