Do ghosts and Dead All Along characters count here? I see a lot of such characters listed, but to be honest, that sounds totally different from the "developed only through flashbacks, logs, etc." definition of this trope.

Fry's father appeared before season 6 of Futurama, right? Wasn't he in a flashback in the one with the seven-leaf clover?

Historical fiction will tend to use character from the period just prior in similar fashion.

Removed Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid example; Metal Gear Solid is itself a sequel, and Big Boss was one of the main characters of the first Metal Gear game.
