This is a little different from what they do in Slash Fic. With that, the author basically just derails a character for their own purposes. But this is sort of The Same But More Specific; namely, you derail a character into something for Wish-Fulfillment. In other words, take an established character and use them the same way you would a typical Mary Sue Original Character. This happens a lot with OC Stand Ins especially, due to not getting much character development in canon to begin with.
Hope that helped.

Kurosaki Karin ends up getting a personality makeover like Hermione Granger tends to over in the Harry Potter fandom. The Kurosaki Karin in canon is a tomboy and has a very strong will. Writers who pair her up with Hitsugaya Toshiro like to flip her personality to that of a girly girl and make her cry over the smallest things.

Matsumoto Rangiku gets treated like she is some dumb blond bimbo due to her looks and the fact that she has used her looks to throw off men to get them to do what she wants.
Ichimaru Gin is treated like a complete bastard, but that is subverted due to the fact that until recently, Tito Kubo made him seem that way.
Hinamori Momo is protraied as a possessive of Hitsugaya Toshiro by people who are pairing her with anyone who happens to be someone other then Hinamori for the simple fact that some fans have convinced others that Hitsugaya/Hinamori is very much canon, when the truth of the matter is, it isn't.
Just A Face And A Caption is in full force here. Does anyone have a better picture that doesn't rely on knowledge of the fanfic to convey the trope?
My Immortal actually has TWO Tom Riddles. One, Tom Rid, is a clothing salesman who is bisezual. The other is Tom Bombadil/Tom Riddle, who is also known as Satan and Vlodemort. While both are goffik, it seems like the possession Sue for these two is the "Satan" one, if not both of them.
quick question, does this includes things like slashes or are those considered completely separate? Just wondering since it doesn't mention them, but fanfac authors twist characters for slashes sometimes.
