Why are there no real life examples? All that does is help brutal cops.

As explained on the No Real Life Examples Please page, natter magnet.

TV Tropes isn't an activist site that's trying to change the world. It is neither helping nor harming "brutal cops" or anyone else. It is a site to catalog how tropes are used in fictional stories.

Considering recent events over the past calendar year, this is probably a justified example. While it makes for great debate outside the website, it would be a massive natter magnet — exactly what we don't want.

Damn it ... TV Tropes is like crack! Oh well, I need my fix.

Nmmm. totally disagree on this cut, which for me is rare: if anyone edits or deletes my stuff then they usually improve on it, or bring up points I should have seen before posting. But I'm really tempted to reinstate this passage:

"** The British police famously go to work unarmed, and refrain from carrying firearms. This is still true 95% of the time, although most forces now have Armed Response Units on instant standby. The downside of this is that when there is a real and present need for British cops to go armed, they simply do not have experience of using those firearms rationally and effectively - they could learn much from American police (who have that experience) about refraining from using guns unless absolutely necessary."

The only reason I haven't done it is that I'm mindful of the advice about starting flame wars, and the full text is preserved in History, so it's arguable as to whether anythings been lost at all. But I am registering disagreement here...

EDIT: "Police brutality" SHOULD have a real-life section. I note there are still real life references in the page quote and description, after all...

The image caption's link in "not to litter." should be Disproportionate Retribution, not Arson Murder and Jaywalking.

Will I be informed if people reply to my discussion post?

Can anyone tell me what this book is?

  • This Troper read a book once about a time traveller. He was trapped in a burning building and could only travel to a certain period for a set time before being pulled back. He makes multiple trips to San Francisco and tries to stop the rape of a friend in the 60's. His suggestion to call the police just has another friend ask if he wants the police to rape her as well.
