I removed this example:
- The world of micronationalism has seen several "people's republics," one of which managed to become one of the most hated entities in the entire micronational community - the Democratic People's Republic of Erusia. Erusia was infamous for alleged human rights violations, constant unnecessary conflict, internal political repression (only one political party was allowed) and repeated involvement in other micronation's affairs. What's worse, the entire nation turned out to be an "experiment" (i.e. a sham), invented purely for some personal gains of the leader, and nearly every member of the tolerant, minority-laden government was actually a fictitious persona.
As the entry itself suggests and is further supported by the page here, as far as I can tell, this is some person's fictional creation and doesn't exist at all in reality (it is like something off of Nation States).
Edit, edit, edit, edit the wikiThis probably should not allow RL examples. Most people are going about saying that real governemtns look good but are bad, and showing a bad perception of real people or governments is the same reason for the deletion and lock on Real life examples for other tropes.
GAME OVER Hide / Show RepliesI disagree. It isn't about good vs bad (subjective), it's about dictatorship or enforced one-party rule masquerading with a name that implies representative democracy (which are both fairly objective).
Watch out where you step, or we'll be afoot. On the subject of Poland, While it is officially translated into English as "Republic", the Polish word "Rzeczpospolita" is actually used somewhat (albeit not with the same menacing feel) like the German word "Reich" or perhaps even by the word "Commonwealth", and refers to different periods in its history (like the current third Rzeczpospolita or whatever).
This is further supported by the fact that the word "Republika" exists in the Polish language, and is not used to describe the Polish state.
Tl;dr, Poland never used the term "republic" during its days as a monarchy, this is a modern translation of a word that only exists in Polish.
I know of what would make a good alternate image (for on the image page or something). In American Dad near the beginning of the episode Rodger Codger is a sign for the fictional country "Republic of Balkavia" when the camera pans down you see that 5 people are hung from it. Unfortunately for the best quality image it would take several skills i do not have. 1. getting the video and freeze frame twice so you get the 2 different parts since you don't see the sign and the people hanging from it at the same time. next edit them together. and lastly resize it in a good way.
I arguably think North Korea should be on the list
Edited by Floater Further, your affiant sayeth naught., and ONLY North Korea.
