Pulled this:

  • If Franchise/Spider-Man starts wearing his black costume again, he's not evil, he's just furious and will put you down. The Back in Black storyline, where he originally put his black costume on, started with Kingpin's hitmen mortally wounding Aunt May, and featured a furious Spider-Man in black breaking in the jail Kingpin was imprisoned in, beating him to a pulp with embarrassing ease, and telling him he left him alive because destroying his image was worse than killing him, and warning he would return to finish the job if Aunt May died.

because it doesn't fit the trope, which is about when the costume undergoes a spontaneous change. Spidey's black suit is a different costume he chooses to wear.

On a similar note, I don't watch How I Met Your Mother, but could someone confirm or deny that Robin spontaneously turns into a goth?

Not Examples:

  • Superman has gone here a few times, most notable in the DCAU with two Alternate Universe versions of himself, both overly violent Knights Templar. One of his alternate-reality doppelgangers in the comics, a Soviet communist Superman, is more morally ambiguous and gets to wear gray. Subverted with Overman in Final Crisis, his doppelganger from a world where the Nazis won World War II; Overman wears black and is a Nazi, but was born into that world after the war and hates what Germany did to attain global stability.

    • Teen Titans also features evil clones of the characters, who are completely black or dark grey with red eyes.
      • Don't forget Blackfire, who is even more of an Evil Twin to Starfire here than in the comics.

I've cut this because it's not accurate:

  • Vivio of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. In this case, we are shown the corrupted black version of her Nanoha-mama-inspired Barrier Jacket first in the StrikerS finale before we see the normal white version at the start of ViVid.
    • Material-S, the Evil Twin of Nanoha from The Battle of Aces game, has a Barrier Jacket in mainly black/dark purple. Material-D, Hayate's Evil Twin, has dark grey where Hayate has white.

Vivio's outfit in Strikers is the same dark blue as the other Numbers.
