So... Does anyone have any idea who started the "gargoyles as actual monsters" thing?

It occurs to me that, should a fourth God of War game be put out (a sequel, not the prequel that's coming), gargoyles could be a natural enemy to add if they have Kratos branch out in some way. It'd be interesting to see what they do with them if they do anything.
What about Katie Randles who is as Snarlgoyle from DC Comics? Katie Randles was a witch who put herself into the body of a gargoyle to save herself from cancer, becoming Snarlgoyle.
