Or is the difference that a Secret Character isn't necessarily a member of a party? Even so, they're too similar to be different tropes, I think.

Is this true? I've never heard ANYTHING about this anywhere else, and there are just enough Shine Sprites for each of Mario's required partners plus Ms. Mowz. The game can't accomodate for another partner, and it's not like Intelligent Systems to make anything unobtainable so soon.

Seems like this is exactly the same as Secret Character. They ought to be merged.
