To tell the truth, I can't tell what either has to do with opera. I know Pavarotti only from music.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanPavarotti was the best operatic tenor of the 20th century. This is exactly why I say that he might make a better page image: people wander in, say "Hey, I know who that guy is! Whoah, is this what he did? I'd better look into this!"
Also, I can't say I like the words under the image, calling Norma "the definitive" diva role. I hate to be "that guy", but there are PLENTY of diva roles.
It's more likely they'll say "Who is that person?" <Clicks next button>.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHOKAY. Things to remember when formatting the opera list / adding potholes:
- Alphabetize, always alphabetize.
- A simple addition of {} brackets only works for one-word titles.
- Multiple-word titles require caps at the beginning of each word. If you just take out the spaces for Death in Venice, you'll end up with a page called Deathin Venice.
- Diacritics and punctuation don't work in titles. Just try fitting in L'elisir d'amore or Káťa Kabanová. Either use a translation or remove the diacritics.
- Alphabetize
In general, THINK BEFORE YOU EDIT and PREVIEW. If something is formatted in a way you wouldn't expect, there may be a reason. And don't delete translations and musical examples (and formatting) when reverting. Yay, version control. Shpanks.
I guess I can get kind of AR about these things, but this page is my baby ...
Clarabell: Oh lerd, the opera list needs some cleanup. We're not trying to overwhelm visitors with a comprehensive list of the standard repertoire that can be found numerous other places. We just want ones that are somewhat familiar in some way or another. Strauss is my favorite opera composer, but at least half of those are getting cut ...
Hide / Show RepliesHave you seen how long the anime list is? It's longer than this whole article. I think the list is at a reasonable length now and covers most of the ones with familiar tunes (Ride of the Valkyries, the Toreador Song, etc.). Going a little beyond that is a good thing.
I think it's overwhelming (and poorly formatted). Have you heard any of Friedenstag, for example?
Ack, and the readdition of potholes destroyed some of the formatting and title cleanup I'd performed, as well as a musical example or two. MY POOR POOR BABY.
I'm wondering if we should change the page image. Without any disrespect to Maria Callas, Pavarotti was THE ambassador of opera. To the uninitiated, he is far more recognizable than Callas, and I think having his face on the page would help draw people in.
