I put this here some months ago. It kind of qualifies - one TV show, which occupies a specialised niche, suddenly does the job of another, radically different, niche TV show in a completely unexpected way and "fills the gap" - but nothing to do with medicine or medical procedures. Moving it here for now, as I'm reluctant to lose it completely

  • Mystery Diners is predicated on an investigation team running sting operations to root out fraud, bad behaviour and theft among restaurant employees. That is, until they took on a job in an allegedly haunted eating place.note  Inevitably, a TV show which investigates fraud and dishonesty among restaurant staff turned up more "hard evidence" for the building being haunted, than an entire series run of those haunted house shows shot in murky green light.note  They even have a far more plausible and telegenic spiritual medium on MD's own staff, which is convenient. It turned out that employees were exploiting the fact their building is allegedly haunted, in order to run unofficial and profitable after-hours ghost tours (and also to take advantage of their employer being superstitious and believing it. He's too terrified to investigate properly, which allows them even more scope for taking the piss.).

The description mentions that it does happen in RL sometimes, so prolly not.

Can someone verify which episode or for that matter which show this example came from?

  • This troper doesn't recall if it was a Law And Order or NCIS, but one police drama subverted this trope when a badly-wounded man spotted a red cross symbol on a nearby building and stumbled into it for help. He'd been too hurt to notice it was a cross with a paw in the center; the veterinary clinic staff did they could with supplies for treating large dogs, but he died before an ambulance arrived to take him to the human doctors.

What about the real-life incident in Antarctica? If I recall, the "Doctor" who performed the surgery was actually an auto mechanic.
